There were two classes of cars -- Premier Padmini and Ambassador. India did not believe in conspicuous consumption. Gandhian self reliance was the order of the era.
You can still see these cars on the roads in Mumbai. Most of them are now taxis and Ambassadors are used to move high ranking government officials. The lack of choice was so ingrained in the society that no one felt that it as odd that there were only two dominant playback singers in the Bollywood industry for feamle voice.
